Today was a sad day.

During the middle of my work day at school, a parent came in early to pick up her child.  As she signed her out, she informed me that her daughter will no longer be coming to this after-school program.  Her work schedule has been altered so now she is able to take her home right after school.  This is usually not a sad moment, but her daughter is Deja.  I don't like to pick favorites, but I adored her.  She was the one who wrote me that letter, and she told me to promise her that I wouldn't leave the program for another job.   Not only me, but Deja was shocked as well with the news.  Her eyes darkened and her mood was quickly changed.  She asked her mom if she could still stay with the program, but hopes were dire. She then handed me her name tag, and gave me one last hearty hug.  She left, and the class was silent.
